State Comptroller Nancy Wyman's improvements to the state's retirement-savings plans have been awarded for excellence by The National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators (NAGDCA).

The award stems from creation of a "Total Account Management" program that allows the plans' 44,000 participants to manage their retirement accounts on an ongoing basis. The retirement plans - Deferred Compensation, 403(b) and the Alternate Retirement Plan - are administered by the Comptroller's Retirement and Benefits Services Division and have a combined value of about $2.4 billion.

"I am proud that this program has made a real difference for participants and has elevated our savings plans to the cutting-edge of available investment products and services," Wyman said.

In announcing the award, NAGDCA said: "By taking advantage of all the educational opportunities included within this program, participants are more actively managing their accounts and have the potential to be better prepared for their financial future."

The account-management program includes:

• A customized web site devoted solely to plan and investment education.
• A quarterly newsletter that identifies and focuses on important retirement and financial concepts.
• Investment guidance through an Asset Allocation Guide that provides specific fund suggestions based on the employee's investor profile.
• Financial education seminars that deliver a clear and consistent message.
• One-on-one counseling offering comprehensive and consolidated information and guidance on all three of the state's plans.
