ATTENTION:Chief Administrative and Fiscal Officers and Business Managers
SUBJECT: Use of Town Codes

Agencies must use the appropriate town code when processing payments to municipalities. Please adhere to the following procedures:

The State Accounting Manual (Section 11, Town Coding Table 3.5) contains a listing of town code numbers which represent unique identifiers that have been assigned to towns, cities, boroughs, school districts and other municipal entities. They range from 1 to 999 and are used to classify payments.

Do not use the town's Federal Employer Identification Number. Listed below are valid town code numbers:

001 - 169 Towns
201 - 231 School Districts/Cooperating School Districts
241 - 253 Interdistrict committees and regional education service centers
301 - 377 Fire Districts
401 - 417 Health Districts
451 - 458 Lake Authorities
501 - 503 Cities not consolidated with towns
601 - 611 Boroughs not consolidated with towns
701 - 798 Other (boards, planning agencies, sewer districts, etc.)
